I love your comprehensive review! I'm going on my very first cruise in 3 months (Oct '24) on the Celebrity Eclipse. I will be missing out on the Magic Carpet, which looks very cool, and from what I've seen, the show room / stage is much more impressive on the Edge as compared to the Eclipse. The Edge's shows and venue look more Vegas-like too. Oh well, I had to take the ship that was going to the Dominican and Puerto Rico, and that's the Eclipse. At least most of the bars and restaurants are the same on both, so that's good. Being my "maiden voyage" so to speak, I imagine I won't notice these differences too much. I'm almost 70, so this is likely my first and only cruise based upon my financial capabilities. Great job - thank you.

Hopefully Princess will apply lessons learned from Sun Princess into Star Princess while she's still being built, just as they have done in later ships of the Royal class. Personally I think the Discovery Princess (my favorite Princess ship) is far superior to her class leading Royal Princess.

Those berthing fees are at rip-off levels. I wonder how much the employees in the ports are being paid - in a country where Stop/Go lollipop operators are raking in an obscene 200,000 dollars a year. Good video.

The cruise lines are making the ship the destination. It's like a floating club med. They want you staying on board and spending. The younger generations take the package. They knkw the total cost of a holiday. Lounge around the pool, play games, dance..Its a great holiday with kids or friends. Why worry about a port where you dont speak the language?

Hi Adrian , my question is left of field of your vid. I’m embarking on a RC from Honolulu back to Sydney 18 nights stopping at Tahiti and NZ On RC FAQ - Am I allowed to bring alcohol on board ? How would you interpret this ( next is straight from RC web site) For consecutive sailings, guests of drinking age are allowed to bring one (1) 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne for each individual sailing. Additional bottles will be stored by the ship and delivered, one bottle at a time, to the stateroom on the first day of each new voyage. Guests bringing more than one bottle at the start of the first sailing should have documentation for any consecutive sailings available to share with security. What does consecutively sailing mean and individual sailing mean ? Back to our 18 nights , we sail 6 nights and land in Tahiti with a few days stop over, then sail 7 nights and land in NZ. Would you interpret this as , we sailed 6 nights ( consecutive/individual) can we bring another 750ml bottle of wine from Tahiti then after more sailing (another consecutive/ individual) bring another bottle of wine from NZ ? So technically 3 bottles of wine over our journey. My interpretation is we have 3 first days of a new voyage in this trip. 1 Honolulu to Tahiti , 2 Tahiti to New Zealand and 3 New Zealand to Australia Cheers Rod

    • @TheCruiseandTravelGuy
      @TheCruiseandTravelGuy 6 дней назад

Hey Rod. Your cruise is technically 1 sailing. This comes down to the fact that it’s only bookable as the single cruise: Honolulu to Sydney. So you can bring on one bottle per passenger.

I think there are 2 thoughts on cruising today the traditionalist and the modernists those enjoy the resort party atmosphere and dont really care about the ports and I think there is a market for both. I sit as a tradionalist and think ports are important as well as the cruising on a ship so prefer the smaller ships. I also think both cruise lines and govt authorities are getting greedy at the expense of their passenges and local commuities.

Totally agree. I think a national oversight body is needed to better align all parties and stakeholders.

Going back to smaller ships won't help! The laws of supply and demand will dictate commercial success or failure - even if compelled by law and the demand is there cruise lines will just build more smaller ships, resulting in exactly the same number of passengers landing in any port. Only way around it will be ports fixing the number of passenger arrivals on any day and limiting the size of ships docking in their ports. Unless it's two a fold approach, the issue cannot be resolved. We do Med cruises every year and don't bother to get off in some ports like Fira/Oia/Valetta/Gibraltar despite being amongst the most beautiful towns in all the Med. The queues are beyond control and when locals urge in all hell breaks loose. Barcelona and Juneau are examples of mass cruise ship arrivals where there is a growing resident resistance which will result in massive changes in the very near future.

Just like Juneau is doing - limiting passenger numbers and ship numbers. And that won’t be exclusive to Juneau going forward. Will be interesting to see how it evolves - conversations around mass tourism are only gaining pace.

China, India and other countries in Asia namely The Philippine Islands are all increasing their tourism industry by building new Ports. The new ships maybe bound for these markets since China and India have 2+ billion people between them. We are not fans of the mega ships though 3-4k passengers are comfortable for us. The fact is, smaller ships have access to some unique ports, some without tendering. Not much Cruise lines can do, either pay more which means prices increase on port and berthing fees, or go somewhere else to visit. We like new Ports.

I think bigger ships are good for families who just want to sail the beachy Caribbean. This gives lots of opportunities for onboard fun. Smaller ships are good for those who want a port experience, historical landmarks, shore excursions.

Not overly keen on the mega ships. The ports, even many major capitals, don’t have the infrastructure to handle them… from docks/piers to transport to attractions. I miss the old Sun class ships (Sun Princess, Sea Princess and Dawn Princess/Pacific Explorer)… at 2,500 passengers they were a great size Looking at worst case scenarios I don’t want to imagine having to deal with 8,000 passengers plus crew in a emergency situation

Love the Sun Class ships too - it’s a real shame Pacific Explorer is leaving next year. Although old, her features, size and passenger capacity are all fantastic.

It will be interesting to see what happens, particularly in our region. PNG and other similar locations cannot handle big ships. And personally, I don't like the mega-liners, it's not what I like on a holiday.

It seems obvious that that RC and Carnival will adapt to limits on port visits by doing what they are already doing. Their massive new ships will be the 'destination'. Just sailing around in circles with a huge number of passengers onboard spending all their money onboard. No hassles with port fees, transfers, tenders. They can probably even cut down on crew numbers. On a cruise about a year ago I bravely suggested to the Captain during a meet and greet session that these ships were getting too big and impractical for the South Pacific run. I added that the ideal size for our area was the Voyager Class. He suggested politely that RC make near 70% of their income out of Miami and that Australia was a 'lesser' market. He added one interesting note _ RC are looking at building more Voyager size ships for such areas. This concept may have gone in the bin with Lelepo but it's something to hope for. Australia could yet benefit from changes round the world.

It’s definitely true that most of the line’s profitability comes from the Caribbean and European cruise markets. Australia is very much small-fry, and things aren’t helped by our currency exchange rates. This is all part of the problems that Australia is facing as a cruise hub going forward. RCI is working on the Discovery Class - their new “small” ship class that will be designed to access ports with restrictions on size. Not much is known about them yet, but I’m thinking something along the lines of an Edge Class ship to Quantum Class ship when it comes to size. I recently made a video about Discovery Class.

@@TheCruiseandTravelGuy Just checked your Discovery Class vid. It ties in with the info imparted by the Captain in the Meet and Greet. One other thing I mentioned in the session was that the Voyager Class ships were very popular in Australia. This received a lot of support from the audience. I'd say that the Celebrity Edge is likely a good indicator for the size of these possible new ships although if they're to be under the RC flag there'll probably be a leaning toward more family fun activities. As an aside I noticed that all the giant new ships have reintroduced the Miniature Golf links on board. I think they were considered old fashioned and were dropped until they found that passengers really liked them.

I would rather sail on a 60,000 ton ship than a 300,000 ton ship, less Karens, less rude slobs, less people.
